Wen Jiabao Meets with Finnish Prime Minister to Promote Further Development of Friendly Cooperation

On October 6, 2004, Premier Wen Jiabao of the State Council who has just arrived in Hanoi for an official visit to Vietnam met with Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen who was there to attend the ASEM (Asia-Europe Meeting) Summit.

Wen Jiabao said China-Finland relationship is witnessing sound momentum of development. The two countries have conducted wonderful exchanges and cooperation in such fields as politics, economy, education, science, technology and culture. With rapid development of bilateral economic and trade relations, the trade volume for this year is expected to exceed USD 4 billion. The prospect for future cooperation is very bright. China appreciates the Finnish government's consistent adherence to the one-China policy and regards Finland as a trustworthy partner in the European Union. Next year will mark the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Finland. China would like to take this opportunity to promote further development of traditionally friendly relations of cooperation between the two countries together with Finland.

Vanhanen positively appraised the bilateral relations. He said more and more Finnish businesses are now investing and prospering in China in recent years. Finland also welcomes Chinese businesses to go to Finland. The Finnish government gives high priority to relations with China and would like to further explore channels for reciprocal cooperation.

The two sides also exchanged views on Asia-Europe cooperation. Wen said China would like to continue to make contributions to enhancing Asia-Europe cooperation and promoting common prosperity within the framework of ASEM.

Following the meeting, Premier Wen met with the staff on Chinese Embassy to Vietnam, representatives from Chinese-funded institutions and overseas Chinese students in Vietnam as well as the Chinese delegation to the Asia-Europe Business Forum.
